PROJECT SUMMARY:
The Apartment Art Show is hosted by me, Raquelle Jac, in downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter.  If you don't know me, I'm a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on comics (and comiXXX), originally from Austin, TX.  I moved to San Diego for an artist residency that has since been completed, and I am now working on my book with Fantagraphics.  I have been living in the space where this art show will be hosted for a little under two years.  I signed my lease and moved in during peak pandemic, so I'm currently leasing this apartment for the lowest rate it has gone for in a very long time.  At the time, it felt like I had hit the jackpot, but if you've ever seen my Instagram story rants, you might know these past two years have taught me I'm not really a "downtown person".  Nevertheless, the apartment is objectively great, and ever since I moved in I've marveled at how great a space it'd be for an art show.  My lease ends on July 26th, 2022, and I'll be moving my things out early in June.  At that time, I will transform the space into a gallery.  This open call is for artists and performers in San Diego and elsewhere who are interested in participating in a casual, collaborative, experimental, DIY, pop-up gallery in Downtown San Diego.  There is no theme or prompt to consider for this show, however one will likely emerge naturally.  All mediums and types of work are accepted, including live performance artists for the show's opening.  Digital equipment is limited, however if you have any requests for equipment such as monitors, speakers, special lighting, or projectors, please ask and I'll let you know if we can accommodate you.  If I don't have it, someone else might, so please ask!  I have exhibited at many art shows and have curated a handful of publications, however this is my first foray into hosting and curating an art show.  My aim for this show is to bring together artists after a seemingly endless period of isolation and panic, and give artists a low-key space to experiment, exhibit, and document their art.

COMPENSATION:
Unfortunately, due to me being an artist myself, I am unable compensate artists for participation.  However, featured artists will be included in a limited print exhibition catalog available for sale at the show and on my website, and all profits from the catalog will be divided equally between artists.

ELIGIBILITY
All artists are encouraged to apply, however local artists based in San Diego will be prioritized.  All mediums are welcome, including live performances to be featured during the show's opening.

THE SPACE
I think this space opens up a lot of opportunities to feature art that's informed by the space it's viewed in.  For example, the apartment has tons of natural light and 6 large windows that open up to the city below, therefore artwork that interacts with light and the sun could be hung in or on the windows.  See the below to-scale map of the apartment.  Another example: someone could build an installation in the bathtub, or a scene in the kitchen area.  There's also the option for someone to experiment with murals.  The mural would have to be painted over when the show ends, but the fact that it'll only be there for a week or so could inform the piece, and give the artist a low-pressure opportunity to experiment with a new concept.  Or someone could use the kitchen cabinets to display work about archaic views of femininity, etc.  Someone could hang a comic about living in a city, next to a window in view of downtown.  Someone could even comment on the wealth disparity in San Diego by making an ironic commentary on the gallery's location in an apartment building located in one of the most expensive areas to live in this city.  These are just some things to think about!  There isn't a theme to the show, so artwork submitted is not required to be in conversation with the apartment or it's location.
